The following meetings, conferences, and professional development opportunities are currently open for registration: Symposium on Sustainability in Health Care (SSHC) on April 2, 2025 and AIA Ohio Advocacy Day is taking place on April 30, 2025. Early bird registration for AIA Conference on Architecture (June 4-7 in Boston, MA) ends April 9. The annual NOMA Conference will be October 8-12, 2025 in Kansas City, MO.

The AI Dilemma: Using AI in the A/E industry with a Risk Management Mindset

This course is intended to provide architects and engineers an overview of emerging AI technology. The course includes an overview of where the technology currently is in development, and where it will potentially go in the future. We also provide an overview of some specific tools (ex: ChatGPT) and how they are being used in the A&E industry. The course seeks to stress where the human element is imperative, and how design professionals can use these emerging tools with a risk management mindset, protecting their firms from unintended liability. In the end, our goal is to make you more knowledgeable and responsible when using AI.

Walking Tour - Trailblazing Through Time: Mary Emery and the Visionary Planning of Mariemont

This walking tour will explore the village's design, influenced by Mary Emery and the Garden City movement, featuring Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and other styles. Participants will learn about Mariemont's history, development, and architectural principles. A key focus will be on the contributions of women in architecture, particularly the Boston-based firm of MIT alumnae Lois Lilley Howe and Eleanor Manning, who played a crucial role in designing Mariemont.

Tax Incentives, Assessed Value, & Appraisal

The role of an architect may include helping their clients navigate through decisions that affect their home value.  Ideally, architects can help guide clients to get the most out of their home investments.  Improvements can create tax liabilities or may qualify for tax benefits.  Learn how the appraisal process interprets home improvements in terms of potential return on investment, as well as how the auditor interprets those same improvements for their assessments.  We will also discuss how various home improvements  may be eligible for residential tax abatement programs available through the Cincinnati Department of Community and Economic Development and how those benefits relate to assessed value.

Cincinnati Canstruction

Cincinnati Canstruction is part of an international design and construction industry community service project to benefit local food banks. 

Architects, engineers, designers, and contractors compete to design and build fantastic giant-sized structures made entirely out of canned foods. The structures are on public view as a giant art exhibit. At the close of the competition, all of the food used in the structures is donated to the local food bank for distribution. 

Through the generosity of volunteers and members of our local community, over the past 26 years, Cincinnati Canstruction has contributed 817,000 pounds of food to the Freestore Foodbank: enough to provide over 681,000 meals to our hungry tristate neighbors.

Every Woman Her Own Architect: Discovering the Forgotten History of America’s First Woman Architect

Louise Blanchard Bethune, FAIA (1856 — 1913) was the first professional woman architect in the United States. Kelly Hayes McAlonie, has been researching Bethune’s life and career to answer one simple question — what were the factors that enabled this woman to break into the Gilded Age architectural boy’s club? This research culminated in the publication of her monograph, Louise Blanchard Bethune: Every Woman Her Own Architect, which was published in 2023 by SUNY Press. Additionally, Kelly will discuss her role in the development of Barbie I Can Be Architect, the career doll of 2011, and describe how her work on Bethune and Barbie led to her fascination with professionalism, fashion, and the image of the architect.
