Program Overview
If you are a small firm owner, you are no stranger to overwhelm, stress and burnout. Stress, financial strain, and feeling isolated are commonly reported by small firm owners and take a toll on your wellbeing. Since you are the backbone of your firm, your wellbeing telegraphs to your clients and staff. In this session, you will learn about the science behind stress as well as valuable techniques to help you reset your stress response. Firm owner and stress expert Angela Mazzi, FAIA will lead you through this interactive session that will include breathwork and exercises to help you get and stay in a calm, high performing state.
Learning Objectives
Understand the basic functioning of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and how it is impacted by chronic stress.
Define stress and its physical, emotional, mental and spiritual impacts.
Name 5 techniques you can use to reset the stress response
Identify the four stress stages including thoughts or statements that signal which one you are in and what actions are most needed at that time.
Speaker
Angela Mazzi, FAIA, FACHA, EDAC is a Principal at GBBN Architects where she practices primarily out of the Cincinnati, OH office. She has a BARCH Degree from Carnegie Mellon University and an MARCH Degree from the University of Arizona. Her research on salutogenesis, equity, and socio-cultural contexts provides perspective on how design impacts well being. She is the founder of Architecting, a community consisting of a podcast, classes in stress management and high performance, and weekly clubhouse room “Architects as Healers: Buildings as Medicine.” She is also the author of two books, Career Crisis and Time Builder.
Angela is Past President of the American College of Healthcare Architects and Past President of AIA Cincinnati. Her research linking wellness to equitable design has been published in many healthcare journals and presented at national and international conferences. She is a peer reviewer for Health Environment Research and Design (HERD) Journal and Academy of Architecture for Health Journal, 2022 recipient of the HCD10 Top Architect Award and 2024 recipient of the AIA Ohio Gold Medal.
About the Small Firm Exchange (SFx)
The mission of the Small Firm Exchange (SFx) is to advance the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms. SFx representatives connect small firm leaders in their local and state components to the national organization.
Ohio’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx) representative Sarah Kleiner, AIA hosts virtual SFx coffee chats and programs so small firm leaders can engage with one another, discuss issues facing small firms today, and see what the AIA can do to support Ohio’s small firms. AIA members practicing in small firms are encouraged to reach out to Sarah to discuss how the AIA could better support their practice.
Sarah is a principal at Envisage Architecture LLC, in Cincinnati, a firm she co-founded in 2016. They have seven employees that range from part-time to full-time. Their practice focuses on commercial projects, particularly retail, as well as multi-family projects. They are currently renovating their own LEED Silver multi-family, multi-use building that will include 11 apartments with their office on the first floor.
