The Committee on the Environment (COTE) meets the first Wednesday of each month. AIA Cincinnati’s Early Professionals working group includes recent graduates, professionals working toward licensure, and recently licensed architects. You're invited to join the monthly virtual planning meetings to share ideas, coordinate ARE study materials and study sessions, and plan activities.
Urban Design Community Gathering
AIA Cincinnati’s Urban Design Community is part of AIA’s national network of Knowledge Communities. UDC provides opportunities to share informed viewpoints on specific urban planning issues through meetings, workshops, and public forums while increasing the role of Cincinnati architects in the public/private sector decision-making process. Urban Design works to continue an exchange of practices and ideas for architecture beyond individual buildings and client interests, with active partnering relationships that impact expected changes.

Communicate Your Value: No One Wants to Buy What You Do
It’s probably safe to say that most architects didn’t choose the profession to become salespeople. It may even be true that doing sales is a necessary evil to get to do the work you’re passionate about - designing beautiful, functional spaces. This session will show you how to tap into your passion for design so you can communicate the true value you deliver to your clients in a compelling way while creating a professional sales approach that will produce consistent results.
Ohio Small Firm Exchange: Stress Science and Solutions
If you are a small firm owner, you are no stranger to overwhelm, stress and burnout. Stress, financial strain, and feeling isolated are commonly reported by small firm owners and take a toll on your wellbeing. Since you are the backbone of your firm, your wellbeing telegraphs to your clients and staff. In this session, you will learn about the science behind stress as well as valuable techniques to help you reset your stress response. Firm owner and stress expert Angela Mazzi, FAIA will lead you through this interactive session that will include breathwork and exercises to help you get and stay in a calm, high performing state.
AIA Cincinnati Chapter Annual Meeting
Join your colleagues and AIA Cincinnati leadership for a review of 2024, a preview of 2025, and the installation of the new Board of Directors. The event starts with social time, followed by a program (5:45-6:30) and more time to mingle. Economy, Load Path, and Compatibility: Three Pillars of Structural Engineering
Structural design is an important part of building design. Architects who do not frequently do this work and engage structural engineers to perform the task may find the designs presented seem somewhat esoteric. This course will present three key factors which together inform all aspects of structural design, an understanding of which removes some of the mystery.
Evaluating Historic Windows within the Historic Tax Credit Program: Best Practices and Guidelines
This course, led by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), provides a detailed examination of how the condition of historic windows is assessed within the framework of the Historic Tax Credit Program. The presentation will tie in National Park Service Brief 9, focusing on the standards and practices for window restoration and rehabilitation. Attendees will learn how these evaluations influence decisions about restoration, replacement, and repair, ensuring compliance with preservation standards while addressing modern building performance expectations.

New Refrigerants, New Requirements
In 2025, manufacturers will be required to use low GWP to meet the maximum GWP requirements set by the U.S. EPA. To meet these requirements, manufacturers are being forced to use more 2L rated refrigerants that increase the flammability rating of these refrigerants. This increase in flammability requires more safety precautions during design that impact mechanical and other disciplines, including architectural. This session covers the outlook of the GWP requirements and provides insight into the new requirements due to these increased flammability requirements.

Turkey Food Pack
A dedicated group of young professionals from AIA Cincinnati, Ohio Valley NOMA, ULI Cincinnati, NAIOP Cincinnati, and OEDA will be volunteering at the Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati on November 15, 2024 and invite everyone to join them. This give-back initiative aims to support the food bank's mission of providing food and services to those in need, particularly during the critical holiday season.
Architecture Matters Panel Discussion
The recent Architecture Matters article in Soapbox, Development Beyond the Basin, considered how neighborhoods and communities outside the central city are making places for new businesses and residents. To continue the discussion, architects representing a range of backgrounds and experiences will discuss community directed development, locations, and typologies in the outer neighborhoods of Cincinnati and communities of Hamilton County.

Lighting Design – Ambient, Task, and Accent – An Introduction to Residential Lighting Trends
Lighting is a vitally important factor in the design, construction, and operation of a home. Adequate lighting is integral for the optimal use and enjoyment of a space. This course will discuss the different types of lighting, lighting components, layers, and even the most common lighting mistakes. In addition, the course will address the importance of lighting for the health and wellness of the occupants.
CDA28 - Cincinnati Design Awards
The Cincinnati Design Awards (CDA) program recognizes the best built-environment design produced by Cincinnati-area creative firms and promotes the social and economic value of good design in our community. Each year, a distinguished nationwide jury of design thought leaders and eminent practitioners presents the awards to projects submitted by local architecture, interiors, landscape, community planners and experiential graphic designers. New to this year, we will also be including student work from local Universities!

Building Departments 101: City of Cincinnati
This session is the first in what will be a series of conversations with our local building and planning departments in panel discussion format. We’ll get to meet our plans examiners and discuss best practices and the do’s and don’ts of preparing for, submitting and managing the permit process with the City of Cincinnati Building Department. Bring your burning questions, pet peeves, and collaborative attitude for this informative session where we will get to know our local building department a little better. We will also get a preview of significant process changes beginning to roll out this fall through the CAGIS ezTrak system, which will be utilized by both the City and Hamilton County.

[SOLD OUT] Spring Green Townhomes Passive House Tour
Sustainability experts Sanyog Rathod and Carl Sterner of Sol Design + Consulting will lead a 1-hour tour of their recent project “Spring Green Townhomes”, two LEED Platinum targeted near-Passive House townhomes in Over-the-Rhine. Carl and Sanyog will talk about the Passive House design strategies that were integrated into the project, and the design process surrounding the project. The tour will include an overview of the project’s approach to airtightness, insulation strategy for the walls and roof, elimination of thermal bridges, and Energy Recovery Ventilation. Overall benefits of passive house design for the environment and occupants will be discussed.

Designing to a Budget in 2024 and Beyond – Part 2
Construction cost increases of 200% or more in the last 5 years has been a shock to the system. Client expectations and even our own gut understanding of the cost of building, or renovating, in today’s market are difficult to rectify with the reality of today’s bidding environment. Part 2 of this program series will focus on strategies for proactive project cost management during design, and project delivery.
