Every Woman Her Own Architect: Discovering the Forgotten History of America’s First Woman Architect

Kelly Hayes McAlonie, has been researching Bethune’s life and career to answer one simple question — what were the factors that enabled this woman to break into the Gilded Age architectural boy’s club? This research culminated in the publication of her monograph, Louise Blanchard Bethune: Every Woman Her Own Architect, which was published in 2023 by SUNY Press. Additionally, Kelly will discuss her role in the development of Barbie I Can Be Architect, the career doll of 2011, and describe how her work on Bethune and Barbie led to her fascination with professionalism, fashion, and the image of the architect.

New Refrigerants, New Requirements

In 2025, manufacturers will be required to use low GWP to meet the maximum GWP requirements set by the U.S. EPA. To meet these requirements, manufacturers are being forced to use more 2L rated refrigerants that increase the flammability rating of these refrigerants. This increase in flammability requires more safety precautions during design that impact mechanical and other disciplines, including architectural. This session covers the outlook of the GWP requirements and provides insight into the new requirements due to these increased flammability requirements.
