Program Overview

Insurance and risk management are essential—yet often misunderstood—elements of architectural practice. This course provides a practical overview of how insurance and risk management protect growing architecture firms, as well as project partners and end-users of the built environment.

Participants will gain a working understanding of key coverages, including professional liability, general liability, property, workers’ compensation, and umbrella insurance, with an emphasis on how these policies respond to different types of risk for the architecture firm, partners, and the public.

The seminar also examines several basic insurance concepts such as indemnification, limits of liability, deductible types, additional insured requirements, waivers of subrogation, limitations of liability, among others.

In addition, the course highlights practical risk management strategies that firms can use to reduce errors, improve project outcomes, and enhance public safety. Topics include evaluating project partners, interpreting certificates of insurance, and recognizing coverage gaps.

Finally, we will touch on the subject of firm wind-downs, mergers, and how insurance supports firm staff even after doors have closed.

By demystifying insurance and connecting it to real-world practice, this course equips architects to make informed decisions that protect their employees, clients, and communities - ultimately supporting safer projects, better outcomes, and more resilient firms.

This program is organized by the Ohio Small Firm Exchange.
