Program Overview

Join Mithun, the 2023 AIA Architecture Firm Award winner, to explore how a unique design practice continues to evolve, thrive and anticipate the future of design. Learn how this integrated design firm driven by a mission of “Design for Positive Change” capitalizes on the power of partnerships, experiments and innovates through research and development, incorporates advanced sustainability thinking into both practice and projects, and continues to create design excellence for each unique place and person that lives, learns and works within their powerful designs.

Presented by AIA Cincinnati VISION.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the Power of Partnerships: Designing requires us to work together with varied groups: clients and communities, as well as other architects, contractors and project contributors. These relationships allow us to build collective knowledge, craft new and innovative ideas, and explore design and construction through new lenses. Learn how Mithun has capitalized on partnerships to expand knowledge-sharing nationally and gain insights related to architectural practice.

  • Experimentation and Innovation:  Learn how R&D can advance positive change in climate, health and wellbeing, construction technologies and Artificial Intelligence. The session will share Mithun’s approach to driving firmwide research efforts that transform projects and design through meaningful inquiry and exploration. Case studies will address key areas of practice including Carbon, Health and Wellbeing, Artificial Intelligence and Equity.

  • Sustainability:  Centering climate and equity in both practice and projects is a critical responsibility for the design profession. Learn how a practice can structure an overarching approach to sustainability focused on: Design Integration, Education / Culture, Tools / Resources, and Networks / Industry Leadership. See how this structure has supported climate resilience work, energy use and Passive House certification, and continued work toward AIA 2030 Commitment goals.

  •  Design Excellence:  Creating places that support and evoke a positive emotional response through integrated design is core to Mithun’s ethos. Attendees will be able to apply presented case studies to their own projects to expand impact beyond site boundaries, considering ecology, exterior form, material and interior, inclusive environments as a core parts of the design approach.
