Program Overview

This lecture explores how to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in architecture. Attendees will examine systemic barriers impacting women and immigrant professionals, including licensure challenges, limited mentorship, and underrepresentation in leadership. Through storytelling, data, and interactive discussion, participants will learn advocacy strategies that amplify marginalized voices and foster inclusive environments. The session concludes with tools to develop actionable plans for EDI change within firms and communities. Participants will leave empowered to be visible leaders driving lasting impact in the profession

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how to define and contextualize Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) within the architecture profession, including how systemic inequities affect women and immigrant architects.

  • Identify key barriers to licensure, representation, and leadership for women and immigrant architects, and examine how these challenges intersect with broader institutional and cultural structures.

  • Explore successful strategies and tools including storytelling, mentorship, policy change, and coalition building that support advocacy and elevate marginalized voices within the design industry.

  • Develop a personal action plan to become an EDI advocate in your workplace or community by implementing inclusive practices and actively supporting underrepresented professionals.

Graciela Carrillo, FAIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C

Graciela Carrillo, FAIA, serves as Senior Manager at Nassau BOCES Facilities Services, where she oversees capital and operational construction projects that support school districts throughout Nassau County.

Deeply engaged with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the local, state, and national levels, Graciela currently serves as the 2025–2027 At-Large Director on the AIA Board.

She is also the Co-Founder of the Immigrant Architects Coalition, a nonprofit organization committed to empowering immigrant architects in their professional journeys. A national speaker and podcast host, Graciela has co-authored two books—City Shapers: Stories of Immigrant Designers and Prospering in the U.S.: A Handbook for Immigrant Architects—and contributed to Latinas in Architecture.

Her contributions have been recognized with several honors, including the AIA Young Architect Award (2022), AIA New York State President’s Honor Award (2023), AIA Long Island Community Service Award (2024), and the AIA New York State Matthew Del Gaudio Award (2024).
