Program Overview
The next adoption of the State building codes will impact the building envelope and the performance of buildings. The presentation will review the relationship between the building envelope, the mechanical systems, and the selection of different materials. It will also touch on exterior wall construction challenges, new materials, trends, prefabrication, and innovation to help architects design an efficient building envelope.
Presented by AIA Cincinnati’s Academy and AIA Dayton.
Learning Objectives
To discuss the entwined relationships between the building envelope, mechanical systems, building energy usage, and occupant health and comfort
Understand the relationship of building energy performance to exterior envelope performance in the context of reducing overall energy consumption and carbon emissions for positive environmental impact
Understand the challenges and opportunities in creating an effective exterior wall assembly in the U.S. Midwest region with its cyclical combinations of hot, cold, wet and dry so as to avoid the pitfalls of moisture infiltration, condensation and sick-building-syndrome
Discuss current and advanced building envelope design and construction processes, how they help or hurt meeting energy reduction targets and compare them in terms of time and costs associated with construction, operation, performance and longevity.
