Program Overview

This session is the first in what will be a series of conversations with our local building and planning departments in panel discussion format.  We’ll get to meet our plans examiners and discuss best practices and the do’s and don’ts of preparing for, submitting and managing the permit process with the City of Cincinnati Building Department.  Bring your burning questions, pet peeves, and collaborative attitude for this informative session where we will get to know our local building department a little better.  We will also get a preview of significant process changes beginning to roll out this fall through the CAGIS ezTrak system, which will be utilized by both the City and Hamilton County.

Presented by AIA Cincinnati’s Academy and AIA Dayton.

Speaker

Matthew Shad

Learning Objectives

  • Understand best practices in partnering with our local plans examiners and how to utilize their expertise to navigate unique sites, designs and client interests while meeting building and zoning code requirements.

  • Understand the building department’s processes and procedures and how what goes into the preparation of permit documentation for submittal can streamline the review process.

  • Understand how to initiate early communication with the City of Cincinnati’s building department about a project, the various Cincinnati-specific permits required by project type, and how this knowledge can contribute to fewer or no requests for revisions and clarifications, saving time and money on the path to permit issuance.

  • Establish an open dialogue between our local architecture community and the Building Department to lessen or remove some of the mystery and uncertainty from the process of acquiring building and zoning permits. Participants will be able to put faces with names and have an opportunity to get to know the people behind the approvals process.

  • Become familiar with the new online submittal system launching with the City’s Planning Department functions this fall, and later rolled out across all building and zoning applications and permits within the following year.
