What is the purpose of the organization that you are involved with?

Provide education, support and networking opportunities to build women into leaders in the construction industry.

Why did you choose to get involved?

Envisage is interested in building mutually beneficial relationships in the local construction community. We are also passionate about mentoring women in the industry, specifically in architecture, but also in construction as a whole.

How does your experience as an architect contribute to the organization/committee?

I am the only practicing architect at the moment in the Cincinnati Chapter. My presence represents an open dialogue of the collaborative design/construction effort. The more we can work together, the better the process to provide quality projects.

How has serving in this role benefits you as an architect?

They have terrific leadership building programs as well as fun socials. NAWIC was so welcoming from the very minute I walked in the room. We talk openly about project challenges.  NAWIC also has many construction site tours, which gives me a view of the technologies and processes the GCs are using to deliver projects. It’s great insight into how we can improve the drawings to move seamlessly into construction.

How much time and effort does your role require?

We have monthly meetings for the chapter and monthly meetings for the board (usually the same night). Like anything, you get out of it what you put in. They understand how busy everyone is and are happy for any level of participation their members can spare.

Would you encourage other architects to get involved in a similar organization?

I came from a corporate environment where we had design and construction working as a team. I believe we work better together, and the first step is to open up the lines of communication. Building team oriented relationships helps us serve our clients and improve our businesses.
