Celebrating Two Milestones in One Year
While celebrating its 10th anniversary, Mansion Hill Custom Floors in Newport received one of five of Wood Floor Business Magazine’s Outstanding Retailer of the Year awards. The other retailers are based in California, Minnesota, and Alberta, Canada.
“Building a successful retail flooring business doesn't happen all at once,” said Ryan Kushner, Associate Editor, Wood Floor Business Magazine. “When the pandemic struck in early 2020, the years of diligence and care the five recipients put into their businesses helped buoy them in the face of the unknown. As the end of the pandemic nears, more challenges await. But as these companies show us, with patience and dedication, there's nothing this industry can't face head-on.”
Before opening Mansion Hill Custom Floors, its founders recognized an unmet need and began selecting wood mills that would distinguish its products in the market.
“We spent long nights and numerous weekends envisioning what products we wanted to offer our customers,” said Bill Walz, Founder and Partner, Mansion Hill Custom Floors. “From day one, our goal has always been to provide quality, unique wood flooring and wood treatments you can’t find anywhere else. We have products from Italy and Germany, and, of course, from throughout the United States.”
On July 1, 2011, Bill and his business partner Jeff Rose launched their custom hardwood flooring company in the Mansion Hill neighborhood of Newport, Kentucky. In the decade since its opening, they’ve faced national economic downturns and pandemics yet persevered—even expanding into Nashville, Tennessee.
“Our wood flooring and wall treatments are made to order,” said Jeff Rose, Founder and Partner, Mansion Hill Custom Floors. “We enable customers to select every facet of their wood flooring. That had been unheard of in our region. Each of our projects is customized – meaning that the wood species, lengths and widths, and stains vary from job to job. We even create floors that curve!”
The pair realizes their customers are central to their success.
“Our customers are why we’re here today and continuing to thrive,” Bill said. “Homeowners come back to us for home renovations and when they move into new houses. They share our contact information with their friends. We’re grateful to homeowners as well as the builders, architects and designers who rely on us for both their residential and commercial projects.”

Certified by the National Wood Flooring Association, Jeff delivers free continuing education courses for architects and designers to learn about types, species, applications, and trends in hardwood flooring.
