Program Overview
David Craun will share his journey from a Design Director at a medium-sized design firm to a sole practitioner offering Owner’s Representative services and back again into a small architectural firm, where he balances both roles. Learn the responsibilities, risks, and rewards of this little-known professional service and discuss why more architects should consider it.
David recently became a Partner at Studio BCC, a majority women-owned architecture firm in Cleveland dedicated to exceptional design. Previously, David had been with Bialosky and Partners Architects for 20 years, where he served as Principal and Director of Design. In the two-year gap between the architectural firms, he created Cleveland Planning Advisors to provide Owner Representation for complex mixed-use, adaptive reuse, and urban planning projects. Alongside his practice, David is an adjunct instructor of undergraduate and graduate design studios for KSU’s CAED. He volunteers as a mentor for ULI Cleveland’s Partnership Forum program and has served in various leadership roles with AIA Cleveland, including the past President and chair of the Committee on Design.
About the Small Firm Exchange (SFx)
The mission of the Small Firm Exchange (SFx) is to advance the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms. SFx representatives connect small firm leaders in their local and state components to the national organization.
Ohio’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx) representative Sarah Kleiner, AIA hosts virtual SFx coffee chats and programs so small firm leaders can engage with one another, discuss issues facing small firms today, and see what the AIA can do to support Ohio’s small firms. AIA members practicing in small firms are encouraged to reach out to Sarah to discuss how the AIA could better support their practice.
Sarah is a principal at Envisage Architecture LLC, in Cincinnati, a firm she co-founded in 2016. They have seven employees that range from part-time to full-time. Their practice focuses on commercial projects, particularly retail, as well as multi-family projects. They recently renovated their own LEED Silver multi-family, multi-use building that will include eleven apartments with their office on the first floor.
