Program Overview

The Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame celebrates the untold stories of Black artists and musicians from Cincinnati, Ohio. This one-of-a-kind, interactive tourist attraction and public park on the banks of the Ohio River brings together people of all ages and cultures, emphasizing the value of equitable spaces within our community.  The park also serves as a catalyst for embracing cultural heritage, fostering social connections, and advocating for environmental stewardship.

The site walk, led by members of the project design team, will provide a comprehensive overview of the design of the park, from programming and concept design through construction.  The walk will also include a discussion of the major challenges faced by the project team – building in the floodplain, designing around existing foundations and utilities, traversing a 14’ grade change on a small site, developing a thoughtful landscape design that creates a tapestry of colors, textures, and year-round interest that promotes biodiversity and attracts diverse pollinators, introducing complex electronic interactive elements into an outdoor park, and extremely short design and construction schedules.

Presented by AIA Cincinnati’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) and Women in Architecture.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the requirements and challenges of building a structure and park within the 100-year floodplain.

  • Demonstrate how to mesh two conflicting grid geometries (the rectilinear grid of the garage below the park and the radial geometry of the park above).

  • Understand how the park design and material selections are related to the site geometry, site location, and cultural significance of the project.

  • Understand the requirements and challenges for designing planters (green roofs) on structures in urban areas.
