Program Overview
Over-the-Rhine is approximately 362.5 acres packed with 19th century brick Italianate and German Revival mixed-use buildings, making it one of the largest urban historic districts in the United States. A 2001 inventory conducted by the City Planning Department staff counted 703 scattered vacant parcels in the neighborhood. Over the last 20 years, many of those parcels have been developed. But many more remain.
This walking tour will go to various infill sites in Over-the-Rhine to show different approaches for infill and will provide a discussion on the varying opinions about the success of the designs. The tour includes a variety of building types–arts, education, mixed use, and residential.
RSVP is REQUIRED as the number of participants is limited. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Cincinnati Preservation Association.
Please arrive between 5:15 and 5:25 to check in so that the tour can start promptly at 5:30.
IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND PLEASE CONTACT US ASAP! This tour can only accommodate a limited number of people so if you are not coming, please let us include someone else by updating your RSVP.
Learning Objectives
Discuss different perspectives (community, municipality, individual) on the success of infill projects and their impact on the urban experience.
Understand how infill compatibility is judged from the perspective of the municipality and individuals experiencing the streetscape.
Understand how new materials can be used in new construction in historic districts to facilitate compatibility and user experience.
Understand how changes to the Over-the-Rhine Historic District Infill Guidelines will impact future construction and the architectural integrity of the neighborhood.
