Program Overview

Every project has an impact beyond the client and property lines. Effectively engaging with communities is critical to ensuring that this impact is positive and supports the health, safety, and welfare of those who interact with a project. This session will explore engagement strategies related to affordable housing and community development, and highlight opportunities to increase the value of engagement and move beyond checking a box.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the importance of identifying and engaging stakeholders throughout all stages of a project, including programming, design, and construction.

  • Identify opportunities to integrate engagement strategies into architectural practice to promote the welfare of the end user and the surrounding community.

  • Implement play-based engagement strategies to connect with a wide audience and convey various social, environmental, and economic impacts of a project to stakeholders.

  • Identify potential barriers to effective engagement and strategies for overcoming those barriers to have a positive impact.

Keynote Speaker

Kelsey Oesmann, AIA
Director of Design & Development with Urban Housing Solutions

Kelsey Oesmann, AIA is an architect and the Director of Design & Development with Urban Housing Solutions, Nashville’s leading nonprofit provider of affordable housing. Kelsey came to Nashville in 2017 as an Enterprise Rose Fellow, and has since contributed to the construction or preservation of more than 700 affordable apartments. She is an advocate for authentic community engagement and policies that create more equitable cities, including transit, public health, and resilience. As an extension of this work, Kelsey designed The Game of Rent community teaching tool to combat harmful stereotypes and misconceptions about affordable housing.

Prior to moving to Nashville, Kelsey designed mixed-use and multifamily projects with an architecture firm in the Washington, DC area. In 2016, she biked from Virginia to Oregon with the nonprofit Bike & Build to raise funds and awareness for affordable housing. She earned her Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech in 2014 and is originally from New Jersey, so she maintains high standards for bagels and pizza. Kelsey also finds joy in cycling and hiking, runs on strong coffee and live music, and never leaves home without a good pen.
