Program Overview
In 1941, India Boyer became the first female architect registered by examination in the State of Ohio. She joined the American Institute of Architects the following year, becoming AIA Cincinnati’s first female member. After working for the U.S. Corps Engineers, Boyer and some colleagues established the firm Vogt, Ivers and Associates where she served as Director of the Architectural Division. She later joined Savage, Walker and Associates where she worked until her retirement.
In 1994, a group of Cincinnati women architects formed the Boyer Guild of Women in Architecture to create a community of women working in architecture, providing mentorship, networking, and support as they developed their careers.
Some of Boyer’s original drawings and papers are housed at the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at DAAP. During this program, we’ll look at some of those materials and hear from early Boyer Guild members who had the opportunity to meet Boyer before her death in 1998. A reception with AIAS students will follow.
Presented by AIA Cincinnati’s Women in Architecture and the Boyer Guild of Women in Architecture.
