Program Overview

Making clarifies ideas… clear ideas enable decisions… decisions move projects forward! This session advocates for embedding fabrication within architectural practice to enhance design, control risk, and add value. Models, prototypes, and full-scale mock-ups help all parties understand the design problem and have a voice in its resolution. This approach positions end-users as co-authors, predisposing successful projects where the community served by the work feels a sense of ownership in the design process.

Using examples and lessons-learned from a constellation of fabrication, architecture, and urban activation projects, the presenter will provide attendees with inspiring case-studies and practical strategies for engaging and contributing in meaningful ways to the built environment we all share.

Presented by AIA Cincinnati VISION.

Learning Objectives

  • Discover how complex projects can be successfully advanced by identifying unique value propositions for key stakeholders

  • Understand how models and mockups can position clients and end-users as co-authors in the design process

  • Learn how architect-produced mock-ups deliver value by clearly communicating design priorities to builders

  • Be able to identify techniques for building community support for public-facing projects

Keynote Speaker

Parke MacDowell, AIA

As an architect, Parke leverages his background in construction to inform design and project management. Committed to embedding fabrication within architectural practice, Parke uses models, prototypes, and full-scale mock-ups to help all parties understand the problem and have a voice in its resolution. With a special interest in the community-building potential of architecture, Parke leads numerous pro-bono initiatives, positioning design as a powerful tool for outreach, community engagement, and building for the future.

Parke established Payette’s fabrication group, which elevates design process and communication across the breadth of the firm’s work. His design-forward projects have recently garnered two AIA 2021 Regional and Urban Design Awards and a 2021 American Architecture Award, among other accolades. Parke is the 2021 BSA Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award recipient and is an Adjunct Professor of Practice at Virginia Tech. Parke received the 2022 AIA Young Architect Award for his contributions to the profession.
