Program Overview

Renderings Don’t Count is a case study based presentation discussing approaches to aspirational designs incorporating structure and enclosure design to achieve high performance dynamic buildings while addressing the common parameters including budget, schedule, constructability, durability, operational/embodied carbon, and overall performance. Too often the most aspirational designs are diluted because of failure to address these fundamental design considerations. A special focus on existing buildings will be included to discuss opportunities to both save the embodied carbon but improve them operationally for their continued life (operational carbon).

This discussion will highlight processes and systems that can address the design aspirations while satisfying all the parameters that make a successful built project because if we do not get it built it is just a rendering.

Presented by the AIA Cincinnati VISION program.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will emerge with an understanding of what products, basic kit-of-part materials, and detailing methods are available to mitigate the impact of thermal bridging to increase energy efficiency, decrease condensation potential, and meet continuous insulation requirements.

  • Participants will learn efficient design processes and methodologies using parametric design to develop elegant forms and structures and enclosures.

  • Participants will understand techniques for breathing new life into existing structure both through structural improvement using Carbon Fiber technologies, as well as new reclad technologies, to both save the embodied carbon of the existing structure and improve the operational performance/carbon of the building for its continued life.

  • Participants will be able to identify opportunities in the enclosure of the building to improve building thermal performance through the development of wall sections and enclosure systems using fiber reinforced polymer technologies.

Keynote Speaker

Chris O'Hara

Chris O'Hara is a Founding Principal of Studio NYL. Trained as a Structural Engineer, Chris has a passion for architecture. This passion has fostered the collaborative approach that is a cornerstone of Studio NYL’s collaborative approach to structures and enclosures. Although Studio NYL is recognized for its skins work with cutting-edge structural glass and glazing projects, their team also specializes in digitally fabricated metal skins, GFRC, reinforced polymers, stone, ultra high performance concrete, terra cotta, and traditional precast.

Chris has served as a board member on the AIA National Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Committee as well as AIA Board of Directors in his local chapter. Chris has also been a board member of the Native American Sustainable Housing Initiative and participated in lectures with the Carbon Leadership Forum and the BSA’s Embodied Carbon 101 series for both Structure and Façade.
