Women in Architecture: Rylee Doane

Rylee Doane, Assoc. AIA, Architectural Intern, Burgess & Niple

What got you interested in architecture?

When I was in high school, deciding what I wanted to pursue as a career, I thought to myself, “Well math and art are my favorite subjects, I’ll look for something to combine the two” and my path to Architecture began.

How did you get started in the field?

The summer going into my senior year of high school I attended the DAAP camp at UC pursuing the architecture discipline. This was my first toe-dip into the world of design, and I was hooked!

Where are you in your career?

I am entering my fourth year of post graduate experience in the field of architecture. I plan to start my ARE exams by the end of 2023.

What’s the biggest highlight of your career so far?

The biggest highlight of my career so far has been learning the technology behind LiDAR laser scanning and being my company’s “go to” source for site survey execution.

What’s been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

The biggest challenge of my career has been navigating entering the workforce during a global pandemic.

Who do you admire?

I admire my mom and the strong woman she is. Growing up she has shown me the value in hard work and showing up. I’m excited that it’s my turn to take her message and run!

What do you wish you’d known starting out in the field?

When I was starting out in the field of design, I wish I had a better understanding about the career path options that you can take when pursuing your degree, the difference between architecture and interior design and how many different markets are out there.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy?

I enjoy cooking, staying active outdoors, and taking care of my house plants as well as my two cats!

Are You a Woman in Architecture?

2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Zaha Hadid’s first US commission and the first museum in the United States designed by a woman – the Contemporary Arts Center.
