Women in Architecture: Darion Ziegler

Darion Ziegler, AIA, Architect, Reztark Design Studio

What got you interested in architecture?

I was interested in a career that utilized my skills in math and science, but also allowed me the opportunity to be creative.

How did you get started in the field?

I enrolled in the University of Cincinnati’s Bachelor of Science in Architecture program in DAAP, which allowed me to experience multiple co-op positions throughout the program. I had the opportunity to spend a semester working in a small, local Cincinnati firm, a firm in New York, and a large, national firm in Chicago. This allowed me to get a better grasp on what I was looking for in a firm after graduation. I returned to the University of Cincinnati to pursue my Master of Architecture Degree and have practiced at firms in Cincinnati since.

Where are you in your career?

I am a licensed architect and lead complex mixed-use projects.

What’s the biggest highlight of your career so far?

The biggest highlight of my career so far is the opportunity to lead the District at Deerfield mixed use project for my firm. The first of the buildings in the development is scheduled to be completed in late 2024.

What’s been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

The biggest challenge for me was the struggle to balance the demanding load of coursework at DAAP while working part time to support myself through school. It was also difficult starting out after graduation with an entry level salary and trying to make significant payments towards my student loans.

Who do you admire or what are you excited about/inspired by right now?

I admire the focus I see people giving to small, local, projects that impact communities in a direct way. Outside of architecture, I see more local brands and businesses opening and flourishing in the greater Cincinnati area, which is very inspiring to me!

What do you wish you’d known starting out in the field?

I wish I had known exactly how much more there was left for me to learn after graduation, and that not all of that information could be learned overnight. There is a lot to be said about the value of experience. Some lessons can only be learned by living through an experience, and that takes time.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy?

I enjoy running, cooking, and patronizing local restaurants when not at work. I love a restaurant with a sunny patio and wine offerings!

Are You a Woman in Architecture?

2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Zaha Hadid’s first US commission and the first museum in the United States designed by a woman – the Contemporary Arts Center. As part of the celebrations, AIA Cincinnati wants to highlight the women in our chapter throughout the year. We’ll be sharing these profiles in our newsletter and social media. If you’d like to submit your profile, please follow the instructions on the form.
