Women in Architecture: Cynthia Williams, AIA
Cynthia Williams, AIA, Architect, Cynthia Williams Architect
What got you interested in architecture?
My interest in architecture stems from my lifelong love of art, especially drawing. When I realized that drawings could not only be beautiful in and of themselves but could also communicate how to build a structure that could enhance people’s lives and their community, I was hooked.
How did you get started in the field?
My love of art led me to major in studio art in college. With a BFA in hand but no obvious marketable skills, I took a clerical job that happened to be at a large architectural firm. When the Director of Design learned my background, he transferred me to the design studio where I used my art skills to prepare client presentations and began learning the process of designing and documenting a building through drawing. I went on to earn my Master of Architecture degree at Harvard and work in I.M. Pei’s office. Several years later, I started my own practice with a focus on residential architecture.
Where are you in your career?
I’ve been practicing architecture as a sole proprietor for over thirty years, primarily focused on residential projects.
What’s the biggest highlight of your career so far?
It’s a highlight when a good design that’s well executed meets my client’s needs and their budget. I recently saw a client whose home renovation and addition project finished just before the Covid shut down in 2020. After three years of spending most of their time at home, she commented: “The house worked so well for us; there was no other place I’d rather have been during that time.” Definitely a highlight!
What’s been the biggest challenge in your career so far?
By far the biggest challenge in residential architecture is aligning the client’s expectations with their budget. Many people are simply unaware of the actual cost and time frame of construction, let alone architectural fees.
What do you wish you’d known starting out in the field?
You can have it all, but you probably can’t have it all at the same time.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy?
I enjoy singing with my church choir and stargazing with friends at the Cincinnati Observatory.
Are You a Woman in Architecture?
2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Zaha Hadid’s first US commission and the first museum in the United States designed by a woman – the Contemporary Arts Center. As part of the celebrations, AIA Cincinnati wants to highlight the women in our chapter throughout the year. We’ll be sharing these profiles in our newsletter and social media.
