Program Overview

New technologies are constantly being developed that have the potential to greatly impact AEC services and performance. Join us for a roundtable discussion of three new technologies – 3D scanning, drone surveying and augmented reality – and how these technologies can help architects, engineers, and contractors during both the design and construction of built spaces. We will discuss what these technologies are, how they are being used, and how they can positively impact safety and efficiency in design and construction.

These new technologies are a valuable tool for architects, engineers, and contractors to increase their knowledge of the existing conditions, project sites, construction activities, and construction progress during architectural projects. In addition, using these technologies provides a safer method of delivering services for design professionals, construction workers, and building users.

Learning Objectives

  • Provide an overall understanding on what new technologies exist and the importance of adopting these new technologies during the design and construction process to provide more efficient services, better coordination and communication, and a safer work environment.

  • What is drone technology, what are its benefits, and how can it contribute to the safety of not only architects but also engineers, contractors, and owners during the construction process?

  • What are the benefits of laser scanning and how can it be used as a service by architects to increase capacity, reduce risk, and improve safety?

  • Understanding new methods of augmented reality and how they can help architects improve communication with the field by removing interpretation and measurement error resulting in buildings that are constructed to the exacting tolerances and specifications delineated by the building design team.
