Learning Objectives
Understand the critical process of safely removing facade slipcovers (or overcladding) from the 1950’s - 70’s and how they sometimes inadvertently preserve the original, historic facades from weathering & deterioration.
Identify and comprehend how the revitalization and adaptive reuse of historic buildings into places of residence can positively impact the emotional and social well-being of occupants when they understand historic preservation and connection to the past built environment.
Understand the key design consideration of natural light as exhibited through the restoration of the Mercantile Lofts historic octagon skylight, interior borrowed light windows, and lower level lightwell patio, all of which promote both personal emotional well-being while also encouraging social interaction at the shared spaces.
Understand how mixed-use properties, as seen in the Artspace revitalization project, can create both residential and commercial spaces with a shared vision for the promotion of arts, elevating the human experience of art through intentional design and development.
