Program Overview

An architect and an engineering firm share how to collaborate on building designs to claim Section 179D and 45L tax incentives.

This session will cover the tax incentive opportunities available to designers and developers of energy efficient buildings. An architect firm and an engineering firm will present case studies and guidelines to achieve Section 179D tax deductions for commercial buildings and Section 45L tax credits for residential buildings. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) recently expanded and increased the incentives, and this session will cover how the legislation change impacts projects completing in 2023 and beyond.

Presented by Ohio’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx).

Learning Objectives

  • Understand environmentally beneficial eligible projects and qualifications for the IRC Section 179D Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction and the IRC Section 45L Energy Efficient Home Tax Credit, including the recent changes introduced in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

  • Understand project case studies showcasing how design standards to benefit the environment were met to certify buildings for these tax incentives.

  • Learn how these tax incentives to benefit the environment are applied differently to buildings owned by private, public, and nonprofit entities and how prevailing wages now impact the tax incentive.

  • Learn the pitfalls as to why Section 179D tax deductions are being audited and what can be done to avoid issues if audited.
