Program Overview

The IBC is an essential tool used to provide public safety, health and welfare. Designing with new materials and complex client programs can push the boundaries of a straightforward code summary. Chapter 34 deals with provisions of the code that governs alterations to existing buildings and changes of occupancy. Section 12 explores Compliance Alternatives. This session will delve deeply into the requirements related to Compliance Alternatives in the Building Code.

Chapter 34 deals with the requirements for alterations to existing buildings and changes of occupancy, including Compliance Alternatives. As adaptive reuse of existing buildings continues to increase, architects need to thoroughly understand the requirements to protect the health, safety, and welfare of those working on the site and its eventual occupants. In addition, architects must be able to explain the regulations to the owner and construction teams. Thorough understanding of the building code is essential for architects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the occupants of the built environment.
